A few years ago I teamed up with Robyn Lidsky from Ruby lingerie to create a tongue-in-cheek campaign commenting on the fracking controversy [shale gas drilling] in the Karoo. Each image has 2 main characters. ‘Count Fracula’ who represents Shell, the massive gas company behind the shale gas drilling, and mother earth represented by our female models.

‘GREED IS A THIRSTY BUSINESS’ – Fracking requires an obscene amount of water. Unfortunately, the proposed fracking sites in the Karoo are some of the most arid on the continent. So for every 10km2 of fracking, around 3 billion litres of water will have to be trucked in from afar. And since the chemicals added to the water are highly toxic and radioactive – we certainly hope they’ll be trucked out again too.

That ‘water carrier’ image was shot in studio with each subject lit and photographed separately. The empty background was an image I shot at the salt pans up the west cost [Kersefontein]. The post-apocalyptic cityscape in the distant background, as well as the water splashes coming out of the bucket, are digital matte paintings added to the photograph by illustrator Caroline Vos https://www.carolinevosart.com/.

As of 2019, the supreme court ruled against fracking and gas drilling in the Karoo https://ewn.co.za/2019/07/05/ruling-on-karoo-fracking-a-victory-for-environment-says-action-group
