Featured Photographer – Jacques Weyers
The Story
We shot at Theewaterskloof dam an hour out of Cape Town for a Norwegian brand called Aurora. When we arrived the wind was dead still. We started setting up and noticed some smoke in the distance. Our Eco officer decided to leave us to go see what was happening. When she got back she told us it was a controlled fire and being managed by a small team of workers. They had chosen that day because there was no wind predicted.
We were already set up and ready to shoot as we felt a slight breeze pick up. Before we knew it the wind had really picked up and we started to see fast bellows of smoke which had clearly stared to ignite the fire. The smoke really created quite a dramatic effect in the images to start with but within an hour we could hardly see anything. Fortunately for us, the wind swung direction and we were able to continue working. Not very fortunate for the workers who were in some trouble and had to be pulled out of the area by firefighters.
